When Marco Polo came back from his Journeys, the Venice he had known had perished - there was no city left, only a facade had remained. He decided that he couldn't live here, and traveled off after staying for a single night in a hotel room ornamented with fool's gold.

He passed the city where a man lived under a bridge, and after three days of traveling he found the city in the center of the world. He went in, and various Marco Polos went out of it - one of them became a military general who conquered the city of Canterbury.
